Then Comes the Evening

NEW DOCS
Set amid the isolated hills of eastern Bosnia, this film provides a quiet meditation on the seemingly uncomplicated lives of two women—one middle-aged, the other elderly. Scenes of daily chores and mundane events, such as sharing a simple meal of baked potatoes, bread, and butter illuminated by a single brass oil lamp, become transformed into real-life Dutch still lifes. A passing storm is testimony to God’s wrath, which may or may not be appeased by invoking the name of Holy God and John the Baptist. Through the filmmaker’s attention to the minute details of the women’s companionable lives together, we too are invited to contemplate every texture, every sound, and every moment of stillness. ER
