The Apollo of Gaza

Invited
A fisherman sees the form of a man shimmering in the shallow waters off Gaza. Not a drowning victim, as he fears, but a bronze statue of Apollo (said to date back to 200 B.C.) divine protector of art and beauty. Before it can be properly examined, it disappears again, into a morass of Middle Eastern bureaucracy. Is it authentic, or is it a forgery? In this twisty mystery filmed in Jerusalem and Gaza, we visit archeologists, forgers, historians, government ministers, and opportunists and are asked to ponder who controls historical artifacts—their myth, patrimony, monetary value, and future. The seductive music of the oud leads us from one witness to another; each has a theory, a hope, or perhaps something to gain from each of the options, depending on whether the statue is real or fake. Apollo comes to embody the dreams and aspirations that interact with the challenging issues convulsing the region. LB
