Slap Shot

Thematic This Sporting Life Curated by Steve James

Paul Newman stars as Reggie Dunlop, the aging player-coach of a minor-league hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs. In the wake of local mill closings and a lengthy losing streak, Dunlop learns that this season will be the team’s last. To boost attendance, the team’s management signs the Hanson Brothers, a trio of thugs who bring to the rink just what the team may need to stay in business:  an irresistible urge to bludgeon the competition. Caught between fans who can’t get enough of the violence (and resulting victories) and a prized player who won’t stand for dirty play, Dunlop plots his fight for survival with humor, lies, one-night stands, and more cursing than any foul-mouthed coach in the business. Hailed by critics as one of the best sports movies of all time, Slap Shot delivers an extraordinary portrait of machismo, lust, and greed on and off the ice.  ST
