Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You

Invited

Sitcom writer, creator, and producer Norman Lear revolutionized television in the 1970s with shows like All in the Family, Maude, and The Jeffersons, comedy hits that satirized bigotry and opened up national conversations about race, class, and feminism. Now a spritely 93 years old, Lear sounds off on his influences and continued contributions in a stylized melding of present and past. Family, friends, collaborators, and admirers (including Jon Stewart and Amy Poehler) weigh in on Lear’s successes—and occasional missteps—while iconic scenes from Lear’s provocative shows reveal how his work is still strikingly relevant decades later. Directors Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Detropia, Jesus Camp) break away from what could be a conventional biography by employing a number of theatrical devices, including powerful sequences of Lear sitting on a soundstage watching and reacting to projected clips from his shows. What’s made clear through this spirited film is the indelible impact of a progressive man who merged humor and social commentary to groundbreaking effect.  EM
