My Country, My Country
NEW DOCS
In 2005, the first elections after the fall of Sadaam Hussein hold incredible promise, but will they be overshadowed by the unaddressed ethnic and sectarian conflicts simmering in Iraq? Dr. Riyadh, a Baghdad native and father of six, is deeply troubled by the desperate state of affairs. Loyal to the Sunni Arab party, Dr. Riyadh must decide whether to support the boycott of the elections or fight for an unlikely democracy, whether to ask people to vote for him or to abstain from voting at all. His encounters with neighbors, patients, political leaders, and family members reveal how troubled Iraqis are by the U.S. occupation and how uncertain they feel about the future of their country. The filmmaker takes you from the Riyadhs’ living room to the Baghdad streets, from the belly of the plane where precious election ballots travel to the polls where Iraqis stain their fingers with the indelible hope for a free and whole nation in the future. A committed, Direct Cinema approach accomplished by a single filmmaker with one camera powerfully invokes heartbreaking questions about democracy, the legitimacy of elections, and the unpredictable will of an occupied people.
