Mr. Gaga

NEW DOCS

Acclaimed Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin has created dances for companies around the globe; he has also developed Gaga, a movement language and teaching philosophy. Naharin narrates his story, supported by archival footage from his childhood, his military service in an entertainment unit during the Yom Kippur War, his early days in New York, and his long career with the Batsheva Dance Company. He cites such influences as his early love of physical movement, his use of dance to communicate with his withdrawn twin brother, his involvement with Martha Graham and Maurice Béjart, and his marriage to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Mari Kajiwara. Beautifully photographed dance pieces interspersed throughout the film demonstrate these roots and the unique ways that Naharin has fused them. Filled with the joy and necessity of movement, Mr. Gaga is both a biography of one man and a celebration of the human body.  AT
