Jingle Bells

Thematic Perfect and Otherwise: Documenting American Politics Curated by R.J. Cutler
Robert Kennedy stands on a city street, loading his wife and children into a car. Shot by D A Pennebaker, this short film trails the New York Senate hopeful as he makes his way to an appearance at a New York City children’s school at Christmas time, with his family and Sammy Davis Jr. in tow. Children hurry to keep up, clutching adult arms; Kennedy reviews his notes before taking the stage; and the youthful crowd swells in cheers and song with dizzying energy. Jingle Bells embodies a particular historical moment and the frenetic intensity of being a figure of the people. ST
