Here One Day

Tribute Kirsten Johnson

After her mother, Nina, took her own life in 1995, filmmaker Kathy Leichter moved back into the New York apartment of her childhood. There, she discovered a box of audiotapes recorded by her mother in the years prior to her death; it took nearly two decades for Kathy to summon the courage to go through the tapes and the rest of her mother’s belongings. That process is documented with extraordinary intimacy and candor in Here One Day, a poignant examination of the universal complexity of family ties. Through her mother’s diary-like recordings, Kathy’s eyes are opened to Nina’s long struggle with bipolar disorder and details of her inner life: the challenges of being married to a state senator, her feelings about being estranged from her son. Employing home videos, old photographs, and frank conversations with family and friends, Kathy presents a deeply humanizing picture of a woman grappling with mental illness, and the effects that struggle had on those who loved her.  EM
