Golden Age

NEW DOCS

Prepare to be challenged on how you conceive of documentary when you experience this work of Finnish artist and experimental filmmaker Maija Blåfield. Blåfield shot “116 hours, 41 minutes, 12 seconds, and 3 frames” of footage between 1998 and 2013 and left it mostly unwatched for 15 years. She then distilled the piece to 18 minutes, combining seemingly unrelated shots with narration and sound. The result is a repurposed re-creation of forms and fabrications served up through her singular lens and voice. Language and character, landscape and country, have been blended and remixed in this self-proclaimed “documentation of remembering and forgetting.” In the marginalia of experience, Blåfield tells us, “a mystery helps us to perceive the world beyond the obvious.”  DP
