NEW DOCS

Within the span of one month, former New Orleans Saint and fan favorite Steve Gleason is diagnosed with ALS and learns that he and his wife, Michel, are expecting their first child. Facing a degenerative disease and a life expectancy of five years, Steve calculates that his only recourse for communicating with their child is via a video journal of fatherly advice, life lessons, and a tender mischief occurring naturally from Steve’s ebullience and winning sense of humor. When the effects of the disease begin to emerge, the once-vital football hero, still in his early thirties, becomes reliant on family, friends, and devices, and Steve’s determined optimism and initiative give way to frustration and fatigue. Throughout, Michel takes care of both her deteriorating husband and newborn son with heartrending strength, candor, and courage. The rewards for Steve and Michel’s resilience are unjustly few, yet there is no shortage of life force or inspiration in their “badass unit,” made up of champions in both senses of the word.  TM
