Five Years North is an intimate dual portrait that offers a nuanced account of immigration in the United States today. Through phone conversations, texts, and videos, the Kaqchikel Maya community of Peña Blanca in Guatemala follows 15-year-old Luis’s experiences in New York City. Luis has to work to pay the debt his family took on for him. The demands of his situation and the pressure to comply with the law and go to school take a toll, and Luis develops anxiety and depression. Meanwhile Judy, a Cuban-American who leads a detention and deportation unit of ICE, is grateful for a stable job but struggles with changing priorities in her longtime line of work. As Luis loses his legal status, Judy brings her son to work with her at ICE, and her unit patrols Luis’s neighborhood. The two seem bound to meet, but when, and with what consequences?  MRS
