Chisholm ’72: Unbought & Unbossed

Thematic Perfect and Otherwise: Documenting American Politics Curated by R.J. Cutler

In this powerful look at a pioneering grassroots campaign, Shirley Chisholm, the first African American congresswoman, submits her bid in a field of 13 Democratic presidential hopefuls, becoming the first African American woman to run for the country’s highest office. When asked to step back from the race by candidates who are polling behind her, Chisholm asserts that 1972 is her time, challenging members of her party, and the country, to take her seriously. Through interviews with Chisholm, her family, campaign workers, and fellow politicians, the film paints a rich picture of the political climate in 1972, and the various forces working for and against Chisholm’s candidacy. Remarkable footage, including news reports and political ads, illuminates these varying perspectives and allows us an inside look at key moments of the race as they happen—from January, when Chisholm announces her candidacy, to July, when the Democratic convention takes place. Throughout, Chisholm’s electricity and command shine through.  ST
