Cameraperson

Tribute Kirsten Johnson
In Cameraperson, documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson assembles a poetic collage of footage she shot over the course of her prolific 25-year career. Eschewing narration and labeling clips by place rather than project, Johnson sweeps us from Bosnia to Brooklyn, Alabama to Afghanistan, zigzagging around the globe in an essayistic, unchronological journey that illuminates the process of filmmaking and reveals just who is bearing witness out of frame. Through artful juxtapositions and montages, Johnson draws unspoken connections between decades of images and asks us to consider the complexities of documentary ethics and the responsibilities of filmmakers to their subjects. Woven throughout is footage Johnson shot with her own family: her mother, afflicted with Alzheimer’s, struggling to remember; her small children, gazing into her camera’s lens. The result is a deeply personal memoir of a filmmaker as she wrestles with the weight of looking on, the desire to capture what is lost, and the joy of human connection. EM
