Bonhoeffer

NEW DOCS

This absorbing and beautifully made portrait of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian who was imprisoned and killed by the Nazis for plotting to assassinate Hitler, conveys the essence of the man and his world. Bonhoeffer’s life is lyrically presented, with his friends and family shedding fascinating light on his breakaway seminary, his travels to America and Harlem, his calls to change the world for the better, and his noble attempts to respond to Nazi Germany as a Christian. The dramatic events in his last years are profoundly moving on an emotional level, even as the film’s commitment to spiritual autobiography allows understanding of his role in modern church thought. Actor Klaus Maria Brandauer gives voices to Bonhoeffer’s writings.  NK
