At Home in the World

NEW DOCS
What can a Red Cross school for refugee children in Lynge, Denmark, teach us about how to make asylum seekers feel welcome? Andreas Koefoed’s captivatingly unsentimental film renders young refugees from Bosnia, Syria, Afghanistan, and Chechnya as more than pitiable victims. The film uses quiet close-ups, intimate access, and nuanced editing to provide a window into the experience of being a refugee, as well as working with refugees. Stories of prolonged escapes from violence, difficulties adapting to a new country, and risks of deportation accompany perceptive sequences of children just being kids. The Red Cross school provides a safe haven for refugee kids and their families as they await word on their cases. Dorte, one of the teachers, embodies the generosity of—and challenges for—any country that accepts refugees. When Dorte’s students must transfer to a regular Danish public school, we empathize with their shyness, while the glad news about one family’s status is as buoying as the film’s final aerial shot. NK
