The Mute’s House

NEW DOCS

Sahar Rajabi, a deaf woman, and her energetic eight-year-old son, Yousef, are the last Palestinian residents of a deserted apartment building in the once-thriving, Israeli-controlled district of Hebron. Tour guides point out Sahar and Yousef’s apartment on Shuhada Street to curious visitors, and local soldiers refer to Sahar, incorrectly, as the “Mute Lady.” In this desolate, isolated streetscape, mother and son persevere. This intimately observational film steers clear of politics (“Hebron is confusing,” says the leader of one tour group), showing Yousef’s route to his school in the Palestinian quarter, his interactions with the young soldiers stationed to monitor and protect him and his mother, and the barrage of trash and insults they receive from Israeli settlers.  NK
