The Sufi chant inspires “a thousand splashing drops [to] celebrate their humility in still water.” Its mystical incantation slowly pulsates. Bodies sway in transcendent unison. Each individual’s gestures become part of a communal ebb and flow. In this ritual quest for enlightenment, egos disappear as adherents lose themselves to the whole. Secular divisions melt away, and the meaning of language dissolves into “an ocean of silence.” This visual poem eschews any scholarly commentary or establishing shots that might ground the proceedings in the secular realm. Instead, the film plunges headlong into hypnotic invocation, inviting the viewer to drift into a trancelike state that’s close to divine.  TAW
