Power

NEW DOCS

With Power, Yance Ford offers a searing examination of the history and evolution of law enforcement in America. Tracing policing back to its origins, Ford illustrates the ways racism and fear have been used to uphold the white power structure, which established the policies and procedures that remain in place today. Writers and scholars discuss this violent system and who it protects, as well as the militarization of police forces, police brutality and the absence of accountability, and the ways policing has been employed to undercut political protest and progress. The film also follows Charlie Adams, Fourth Precinct Inspector for the Minneapolis Police Department, who describes the challenges his work entails, and the ways policing needs to change through a personal lens. Weaving archival footage and interviews, Ford’s narration underscores potent connections and poses pivotal questions, inviting the audience to interrogate their own relationship to, and complicity in, the systems laid bare on screen.
