In desperate times Fox Rich took part in a desperate measure—attempted robbery of a credit union in Shreveport, Louisiana, with her husband, Rob. The couple’s plot failed, and Fox and Rob were apprehended and sentenced to prison terms of 19 and 65 years, respectively. Released after three years, Fox returned home to raise their sons and to take on the relentless fight for Rob’s release, recording home videos for him while making a formidable advocate and entrepreneur of herself. Director Garrett Bradley’s first feature, rendered in evocative black and white and with an ethereal score comprising Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou piano pieces, casts a beguiling technical and impressionistic spell reminiscent of Jean Vigo’s L’Atalante from 1934. Invoking adversity and aspiration, resilience and reverie, it is an intimately observed and artfully shaped document.  TM
