NEW DOCS
Taking as her subject the pain inflicted on children by their parents’ separation, filmmaker Jacqueline Zünd has produced an exquisite work of cinematic art. In Where We Belong, we observe five highly perceptive children of different backgrounds and ages living in Switzerland as they reflect on their parents’ mostly acrimonious divorces and the resulting instability in their lives. This expertly crafted film is remarkable for the poignancy created by the children’s narration overlaying beautifully shot scenes of their everyday lives. We follow a pair of preteen twins on a vacation at the beach; two Afro-Swiss siblings living in a state “home”; and a somewhat reckless rural teenager. There are no overt adult voices here, but through the montage of the children’s recounting and the melancholic beauty of the cinematography, we may ultimately find wisdom and hope for a new paradigm of relationships.
