Supermen of Malegaon

NEW DOCS

You’ve heard of Bollywood, but have you been introduced to Mollywood—Indian films made by and for the Muslim community of India? In the impoverished, film-obsessed city of Malegaon, Shaikh Nasir, a wedding videographer, has the brilliant idea of remaking popular Holly- and Bollywood films with local actors, in the local dialect, and with local references. Faiza Ahmad Khan documents the creation of Nasir’s remake of Superman. From casting (of the skinniest superhero ever to grace the screen) to improvised special effects to its screening for cast and crew, this film captures the joys and tribulations of a very particular love affair with movies. As Nasir remarks, “you can make someone happy anywhere in the world.” Indeed he can.  AT
